A New Low Point…

The Tuckster puts his head in his hands after the home defeat to Luton Town FC in the FA Cup….

I’m not going to write a regular report this week, in all honesty I hardly have the heart.

Losing to Luton Town in the FA cup has to be one of the most embarrassing things to happen to our club in recent years.

It’s not that Luton didn’t deserve it – of course they did. If you were there, like me, probably with your kids then you know all you need to about this debacle.

It’s not as though we played a team full of youth team lads – these were full first team squad players and they let us down.

Nobody in a yellow shirt had a good game. Three good chances were wasted in the first half and other than a Holt header that forced Mark Tyler into a save in the second, that was as good as it got.

Jackson is not good enough, let him go if Wolves want him.

Surman was poor but he was literally returning from injury, maybe there’s some slack to cut him? No, I uthought not.

Jonny Howson was ineffective and seemed to play defensively along with Fox – surely Fox should stay back and Jonny should be in the box?

Elliot Bennett was also ineffective and Harry Kane was mostly anonymous.

After the match though I was fortunate enough to be around for the Man Of The Match presentation in the Gunn club – I’ve never done this before and it was interesting, to say the least.

My mate and I had our two boys with us and they wanted autographs, so we stuck around.

Russell Martin was ages, no doubt getting the hairdryer.

As we stood near the door, a club employee asked us not to jump on him as soon as he came in as ‘he’s just had a grilling’ but added that Martin would sign anything we wanted.

When he came through though, Martin came straight over to our lads and signed their programmes – as he handed me the programme back he said to me ‘I’m sorry about the game’.

He seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders and I didn’t have the heart to say anything back other than ‘These things happen’ (I know), ‘I’m sorry’ he said again as he was led away to the post match interview.

His interview was in front of a packed room. It was honest, candid and heartfelt – he offered no excuses and a shed load of apologies. It must’ve been very hard for him to do (the least he deserves, you’re probably thinking).

If you’ve ever wondered how a player feels after a defeat like this then Martin’s reaction was exactly like a fan would hope it would be.

The worst thing about this is not the embarrassment of facing your work colleagues on Monday or anyone else you happen to see for that matter, it’s the bigger picture and what it means.

We are now in a terrible run of form and can’t buy a win. Spurs are up next, another easy one eh?! PL survival is vital and the next four days of the transfer window will be massive.

We need new players and hopefully the lift they can give us. Let’s hope that Ricky Van Wolfswinkel wasn’t watching that eh?

As for Luton, all credit to them, they deserved this win and in the nicest possible way I hope they draw Man Utd away in the next round – the finance would be brilliant for them.

Come on Mr McNally, lets’s get the player(s) we need – it could make all the difference…
