I first read about this yesterday on Twitter but didn’t write anything about it because I really can’t see it has any legs BUT lots of mainstream media outlets are now reporting it, like The Green ‘Un and the EDP

The Northern Echo seem to have started this rumour, suggesting that Norwich have enquired with Newcastle about the availability of former Ipswich Town striker, Daryl Murphy.

Murphy is an old fashioned centre forward, standing at 6’2′ and without a great deal of pace, he is as strong as an Ox though and a real handful at this level, as Timm Klose found out last August.

Newcastle paid Ipswich £3m for Murphy last summer and he scored 7 goals in 26 appearances for the Magpies as they made their way to the Championship title.

He’s 34 now though and the Echo suggest Newcastle would like the bulk of their £3m back, I’m sure they would.

There is no way that he can be worth that much at his age. If Graham Dorrans is going to Rangers for less than £1m then I’d say that’s a gauge of what he’s worth.

Would we be interested? You’d have to assume that he’s going to be on a decent salary, so to replace say, Cameron Jerome with him, would be pointless in my opinion.

Then you’ve got the Ipswich connection to deal with. If we signed him and he did well, then it’s good value for when we meet our old mates from down the road but if he doesn’t hit the ground running then there will be plenty of stick for the board from the Canary faithful.

At his age, I’d be surprised. Yes, we need another striker but I’d be keeping Oliveira and Jerome and adding a different type of player – not a cart horse.
