The hamstring injury picked up by Leon Barnett against Reading last weekend will almost certainly keep the central defender out of action for the rest of the season.

Barnett limped off with eleven minutes to play against the Royals on Saturday, and at his pre-match press conference this morning City boss Paul Lambert told reporters that he will ‘99.9%’ require surgery.

Lambert also revealed that he was close to bringing in an experienced replacement on loan as cover for the 26-year-old, but any deal is not expected to be completed before tomorrow’s top-of-the-table game at Leeds.

The news casts fresh doubt on the future of Jens Berthel Askou – whose loan period at Millwall ends this weekend – after Lambert opted against recalling the Danish defender.
