Bournemouth 2 – 1 Norwich: The Carabao Cup Vital Statistics

Norwich City dominated Premier League Bournemouth but came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat in the Carabao Cup and with it, the chance of a lucrative quarter final.

Daniel Farke made eight changes to the side that beat Brentford on Saturday with only Christoph Zimmermann, Jamal Lewis and Alex Tettey keeping their places.

Michael McGovern, Ivo Pinto, Ben Godfrey, Tom Trybull, Felix Passlack, Mario Vrancic, Onel Hernandez and Dennis Srbeny were the changes but you wouldn’t have known who was the Premier League side if you had just pitched up from Mars to watch a game of football.

City were unlucky to find themselves 1-0 down at the break after Stanislas converted Defoe’s pass with Ivo Pinto nowhere to be seen.

That was just about the only thing that the home side managed of quality in the first 45 as Norwich dominated the ball. Srbeny hit the inside of a post and Trybull had a header cleared off the line in a frantic end to that half.

The second half saw the Canaries continue in that vein and Hernandez’ fierce drive was pushed onto a post by Boruc, just before he scored on 70 minutes.

It was no more than their efforts deserved but the lead lasted just 2 minutes and 40 seconds before Steve Cook lashed home the loose ball from close range after Vrancic had blocked a goal-bound strike.

That was how it stayed as the Cherries hung on to move into the last eight, despite some intense late pressure from City and numerous chances as the clock ran down, including a sitter from Rhodes at the death.
