Club still marches to Delia’s tune

SAVVY_MONKEY is back with a tribute to the Queen of Norfolk.

So the march continues.

The last two games have yielded 4 points, and these were hardly against meek opposition. Bristol City now have 5 wins out of 6. Their only defeat was courtesy of the now familiar last-ditch yellow onslaught.

Keeping up this average of two points per game from the remaining eight games will leave us at the end of the season with 83 points. In four out of the last five Championship seasons, this would be enough to take the coveted second promotion spot. Cue delirium.

Now it’s a dangerous game to start totting up the predicted scores for fixtures yet to be played, but the key point is that our destiny is in our own hands. Our home games (save for the Forest game) look very winnable. Win these and pick up some away points here and there and Lambert will have taken us taken us into the Promised Land of The Premiership; he will have achieved immortal status with Canary fans everywhere, I suspect he will be courted by some very attractive suitors indeed.

The man has the Midas touch. However, credit doesn’t and shouldn’t go just to him. Delia and Michael Wynn-Jones deserve as many if not more plaudits.

The last time I looked at the Clubs’ Accounts (Jan this year) they didn’t make great reading. Make no mistake. Football does not make money. The only reason we have a Holt, a Ruddy or a Lambert is the money that is pumped in each year to keep the club trading, and the ongoing tough negotiations with the banks.

In fact, if I remember correctly it was only a deferral of repayments on loans with AXA and RBS that has kept the wolf from the door over the last 12 months.

Now of course this isn’t all down to the famed majority shareholders. They have made mistakes in the past (Grant, Roeder, Gunn, keeping Worthy too long etc.) but it just feels as though something has clicked.

Many Canary fans will point to David McNally as the man behind the Lambert appointment, the hard-nosed business brain behind the turnaround in general. His appetite for embracing social media seems to have gone down particularly well.

The swift and eloquent Twitter response to the Craig Mackail-Smith saga was illustrative of this. @davidmcnally62 is doing a cracking job. However, let’s not forget who appointed him or who gave him the autonomy to make some tough decisions. Delia is nearly 70, Michael Wynn-Jones is older. ‘We have enough money for what we need’, says Delia. ‘Everything else we put into the football’.

How many people, even fans, would really do that? Lambert and the players deserve their praise. But let’s not forget who’s helped get us into this enviable position, who kept the club in existence and taken a lot of flak during the bad times.

You can keep your Arab owners and stock market flotation’s. This recipe still works for us. 83 points in May and cue Delia-rium.
