Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd is hoping Ian Henderson is the man to fire his side to League One promotion.

Thetford-born Henderson, 24, left Turkish side Ankarag├╝c├╝ in October and has been recently been training with the U’s.

He travelled with the squad for the record 7-0 FA Cup defeat to Preston North End (DVD to follow) on Saturday, and Boothroyd confirmed after the game that he expects Henderson to sign once international clearance has been received from the Turkish FA.

Henderson started his career at Carrow Road and made 79 appearances for the club before joining Northampton Town on a two-year contract in the summer of 2007, but his stay at Sixfields was cut short when the Cobblers terminated his contract in December 2008 after he failed to find the net in 33 appearances.

A six-month stint at Luton was to follow where he scored once in eighteen games, but after the Hatters were relegated to the Blue Square Premier he moved to Turkey.

The U’s need a replacement for top scorer Kevin Lisbie, who appears to have been priced out of a permanent move to Essex.

In other news, the club have confirmed that more than 3,000 written applications were received for City’s trip to Colchester on 16th January.

Those in priority groups one (away season ticket holders) and two (season ticket holders with 10 away stubs) have been successful, and there will be a ballot in priority group three (season ticket holders without stubs and members with stubs).
