Canary chief Paul Lambert couldn’t hide his delight after yesterday’s crushing win against former club Colchester United.

Two goals from Chris Martin and further strikes from Gary Doherty, Oli Johnson and Grant Holt gave the Canaries a 5-0 win at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, and speaking to the Pink’un after the game Lambert said:

‘The lads were brilliant, they really were, considering everything that’s gone on and all the things that have been said.

‘I thought the lads kept their heads, kept the game going and we were worthy winners.’

The result went some way to putting right the humiliating 7-1 defeat to the U’s on the opening day of the season, and although Lambert said revenge may have been on some of his player’s minds, the most important thing was going back to Norfolk with all three points.

‘The lads at Norwich were beaten heavily at the beginning of the season and I’m pretty sure for some of them it was at their back of their minds but they never ever showed it,’ he said.

‘We came here to try and win another three points, which we’ve done. I said to the lads you’ve got to change our game for certain conditions but I thought some of the football we played in really bad conditions was exceptional.’
