Midfielder, Gary O’Neil could join Norwich City in the coming days, according to The Daily Mirror’s, James Nursey.
O’Neil was released by Queens Park Rangers at the end of the season and is now available as a free agent. Having been spotted in the stands watching City beat Nice 5-1 on Monday evening, it seems something is definitely in the offing.
O’Neil is 31 now and has built a steady reputation as a reliable player who will also score a goal or two. He built this reputation after joining Middlesborough in 2007 from Cardiff for £5m, before leaving for West Ham in January 2011.
He played a key role in the side that was promoted after beating Blackpool at Wembley in 2012 but declined the offer of a new contract from the Hammers in 2013 and subsequently joined QPR as a free agent for last season.
O’Neil made 29 appearances for Rangers and again played a key role in the promotion campaign before making his final appearance in the play-off final against Derby, where he was infamously sent off for a cynical foul on Johnny Russell.
It was a professional foul that saw Russell denied a goal scoring opportunity and turned out to be his last appearance for the club as he has been released and is now again a free agent.
So, is he worth a punt? In the same way that Harry Redknapp saw he needed experience I think he probably would be. If we lose Leroy Fer then we could do with a replacement. As a free agent and if given a short contract, maybe just one year, then he would be a handy player to have.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather not lose Fer, he’s not as good as Leroy and he is not a like for like replacement but he is a midfield player that could do a job for us.
What do you think?
