Glenn Middleton has joined Glasgow Rangers Norwich City have announced

The 18 year old Scottish winger leaves on a free but with an “additional sell-on clause related to his future development.”

He is of course, well known to Rangers boss Graham Murty, who coached Middleton when he was in charge of the City U18s before making the switch to Ibrox.

I have to say that I`m a bit disappointed by this news, as I`ve followed Glenn since he burst onto the scene as a 15 year old, playing for the U18s. He is a dynamic, goal scoring winger and he looks to have a big future. It seems though that this was player driven, as Academy Manager Steve Weaver, explains: ‘Glenn expressed a desire to play first team football.

‘This hasn’t been easy for us to sort as there is strong competition in his position within the first team. Now, this opportunity has come up for him to go to Rangers.

‘He`s a Scottish lad and it`s a great chance for him to go home and play some first team football. It`s in his best interests to go and play up there.

‘We’d like to thank Glenn for his service to Norwich City and wish him the best for the future.’

The bottom line here is that you cannot guarantee first team football to anyone and with Josh Murphy, Onel Hernandez and Marley Watkins ahead of him at Norwich, he wasn`t going to get the chance he so clearly craved.

You can`t knock the club for that and in fact, it`s decent of them to have the player`s best interests at heart.

Good luck Glenn.

  • Watkins now a winger? he seems to be (un)able to play everywhere! Nice of the club to just let him go for nothing but what about the future and thinking about the club!

What other club just lets its top talents go for nothing ? It is a bit of a joke.

Twitter not happy. We still seem to have the attitude of if you’re under 21 you are not ready. I think Middleton would have been playing for most of the championship clubs but not us as we have Marley Watkins a head of him.

I am just a bit annoyed that Crowe – Tofollo – Middleton just go for nothing. Why do we have an academy if the talents are just given away – ah yes because once in a blue moon we get to sell a murphy. We could have made money from these guys but it sounds as if the player has said ‘I am wanting to pay 1st team football’ and the club says ‘okay fine you’re in charge and pick where you want to go and we will let you, even though we have a contract and pay you’ joke.

  • I cant agree either tuckster. Murphy has been a total let down, Watkins is Watkins and hernandez has only just come in. Middleton is watching players around him that were rated far lower getting opportunities and, quite rightly, wanted to play. I would have happily sold Murphy or Watkins to give him a chance. This is really, really poor business from what I’ve seen of this kid and just strikes of yet another foolish decision to help raise the concerns of fans about the longevity of this double act. When you have next to no positivity around the club, its best not to crack a very distasteful joke.
