Marley Watkins looks set to join Bristol City in the summer according to a report today in the Mirror, as reported by the Bristol Post
The 27-year-old Welsh international joined Norwich on a free transfer from Barnsley last summer in what, on the face of it, looked to be a good bit of business.
Watkins had scored 10 goals last season with the Tykes and was available for nothing, which looked to me at the time, like a great option. There were several other Championship clubs interested in his signature but he chose Norwich ahead of those clubs, which included Bristol City.
Robins’ manager, Lee Johnson brought Watkins to Barnsley in 2015 so knows him well. Johnson then tried to sign him last January with an offer rumoured to be in the region of £2m being knocked back by the Canaries before Johnson turned to Liam Walsh from Everton and Liverpool’s Ryan Kent.
Watkins has made 12 starts, 12 appearances from the bench but has no goals to his name and just one assist. To say he’s been poor for Norwich is an understatement.
If this is accurate and Marley is on his way then I don’t know any Norwich fans that will bemoan his departure, certainly not in the VN forum!
The frustrating thing is that after that decent last season at Barnsley, there is clearly a player in there, somewhere, he’s just never showed up in yellow and green.
