Nottingham Forest 2 Norwich City 0
Saturday 30th August 2003
A freak goal from David Johnson and a controversial penalty condemned the Canaries to defeat the last time they visited the City Ground.
Every wondered why Greeno always looked over both shoulders before dropping the ball to punt down field? It was all because of what happened after 29 minutes.
The City goalkeeper collected a cross, and after failing to check the coast was clear rolled the ball out, only for the tricksy former Ipswich striker Johnson to appear on the scene and fire into the empty net – much to Green’s embarrassment and the shock of a watching Sky Sports audience.
The goal stunned the visitors, and in truth Forest were unlucky not to extend their lead before the break.
Just six minutes into the second half the hosts doubled their advantage when Gary Holt was adjudged to have fouled Johnson in the box.
The penalty was harsh to say the least, but it didn’t prevent Marlon Harewood from blasting the ball beyond Green’s despairing dive.
Although the result was typical of City’s televised matches, the yellows had the last laugh – come May we were league champions and set for our Premier League advantage.
