We all know supporting Norwich City isn’t the easiest thing to do. My mental sanity has taken a bashing, particularly in the last two seasons.

Those 6-2 and 4-3 defeats against Newcastle were embarrassing. The 5-4 against Liverpool was a catastrophe.

But losing to Millwall tops it all.

We were outplayed, outfought and outfoxed by a team who finished 6th in league one last season and for the full ninety minutes we were comfortably second best all over the pitch.

What really annoys me though is the manner in which we conceded the goals, all four were completely avoidable. The first came from not dealing with a simple long ball upfield, the second came from a complete lack of defensive shape, the third from simply not closing down their man and the fourth from came from, again, not dealing with a set piece.

What makes it even more embarrassing is the fact the corner was floated in, which should have made it easier to defend.

It’s obvious the way Millwall would play, Farke even highlighted it in the Friday presser, they are a physical team who will ‘get in your faces’. They have Steve Morison up front, they were never going to play tiki taka Barcelona football. Many teams in the championship play this way, and if we continue to not do the basics right, then what chance do we have?

Mr Farke chose the wrong selection again for me. A midfield of Reed, Maddison, Vrancic and Hoolahan was never going to have the sufficient muscle to win the ball back regularly, because you can criticise the defence all you like, but without any protection from midfield we will always struggle.

I would have stuck Tettey in there, he played well in midweek and we would have benefited from a more physical player in the middle of the park. Another thing that was wrong was the inclusion of Russ Martin.

Whilst I disagree in booing a single player (booing the whole team was called for though) he was awful again. Why he started I will never know, he is not a CB, nor should he be near the first team. I also thought Yanic Wildchut would have started on the wing.Wes Hoolahan never has been and never will be a winger, so don’t play him there.

I’m not sure whether the international break is a good thing or not for City and we don’t have long left in the transfer window. Farke said he is happy with the squad he has, but I’m not.

We look light in the striker department (I know we won’t sign one, but I’m just saying), we clearly need another CB and I hate to say it, another LB. James Husband has shown he isn’t good enough and Harry Toffolo has been injured along with Jamal Lewis. If either of those two were fit I would have started them on Saturday, but we are stuck with Husband and Stiepermann, who I don’t trust at LB.

Anyway, before writing I didn’t plan to rant, but I couldn’t help myself after that shambles we witnessed on Saturday. It’s all well and good playing a possession based style of football, but if you don’t have enough quality on the pitch to do it justice, along with no base in which to build from, your identity as a football club starts to go a different way.

We have two weeks until Birmingham City, does anyone genuinely believe we’ll beat them? I highly doubt it. At least it’s not May…. yet.
