Manchester United Will Target Norwich Youngster This Summer

|

Manchester United could make a move for Norwich City central defender, Ben Godfrey in this summer’s transfer window, according to The Sun.

This transfer rumour first raised its head about a month ago and just like several other Norwich players who have performed well this season, Godfrey is getting noticed.

Godfrey, 21, spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town, becoming a hugely important part of Paul Hurst’s team as a defensive midfielder. He impressed in two FA Cup games against West Ham and helped the Shrews to the League One play-off final where they lost to Rotherham.

Ben then returned to Norwich for this season and having waited patiently, has grabbed his chance with both hands after stepping in as a late replacement for Timm Klose, who was injured in the warm-up of the home game with Bolton in December.

Daniel Farke had previously raised a few eyebrows when he described Godfrey as having “all the attributes to become a world-class centre back” but he’s taken to it like a duck to water and with both Klose and Grant Hanley fit again, the biggest compliment to him and his ability is that he is keeping them both out of the team.

Most recently, Ben scored the winner at Rotherham, where the Sun says he was watched by Manchester United scouting staff. He then made his England U20 international debut on Friday when he played the full 90 minutes against Poland.

A figure of £10m is being bandied about but the reality is that with three years left on his current City deal this summer, he’s going to surely be worth a lot more than that. As we’ve already discussed with the likes of Max Aarons and Jamal Lewis, promotion is going to be critical to keeping these talented lads at Norwich and getting them to progress here rather than somewhere else.

Eight games to go…
