Norwich City U23s beat their Middlesbrough counterparts, who are top of the table in the Premier League Two Development League, 1-0 on Sunday at Colney.

The game was notable for the inclusion of overage players, Russell Martin, Marcel Franke and Steven Naismith, who returned to competitive football for the first time since the League Cup win over Charlton in August.

Naismith has struggled with a niggling ankle ligament problem since then and managed 60 minutes against the Teesiders before being replaced.

Also playing was Jamal Lewis, who played the full 90 minutes at left back, which is timely for me, after watching Marco Stiepermann struggle against Sheffield Wednesday. Whether or not the dynamic young full back can cut it at Championship level is a big question but it looks as though we will soon find out.

Pierre Fonkeu scored the game`s winning goal in the 18th minute, sealing a deserved win for the Canaries and their second 1-0 win in a row.

Norwich City: Oxborough, Sambu, Franke, Martin, Lewis, Phillips, Aransiba, Fonkeu, Naismith (Higgs 61), Cantwell, Abrahams. Subs (not used): Wallis, Hallett, Fleming, Da Costa.
