Nelson Oliveira Scores Twice As Norwich U23s See Off Newcastle

|

Nelson Oliveira scored both goals as Norwich City’s U23 Development side came from behind to beat their Newcastle counterparts in a Premier League 2, Division 2 clash at Colney on Friday afternoon.

Nelson hasn’t featured in a Norwich shirt since the final game of last season, that ignominious 5-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in May.

Since then he’s been kicking his heels somewhat as Daniel Farke has moved his striking ideas in a different direction and all parties have tried to get Nelson a move away from Carrow Road.

That didn’t work out and today, his exile finally came to an end as he played the full game along with compatriot, Ivo Pinto as overage players in Matt Gill’s U23 team against Newcastle. Pinto is looking to gain match fitness after a hamstring strain and could feature against Wycombe next week.

The visitors took the lead through Adam Wilson in the 19th minute, only for Oliveira to equalise with an excellent long-range strike on 33 minutes, ensuring that the sides went in equal at the break.

The second half belonged to Norwich though with a superior passing game that culminated in Oliveira nodding home Pinto’s cross on 78 minutes and that’s how it finished.

What happens from here is anyone’s guess but once he’s match fit again, does Nelson become a legitimate option for Farke once again?

Considering he’s one of the highest earners at the club and Swansea bid £12m for him just over 12 months ago, he’s surely got to be an asset to us, hasn’t he?

Fingers crossed that Farke considers him because he’s certainly more of an option than Dennis Srbeny. Will we see Nelson in the squad against Wycombe?

We’ll see.

City XI: McCracken, Pinto (Kamal, 84), Richards, Odusina, Jones, Phillips, Power (Spyrou, 61), Aransibia, Idah, Oliveira, Coley
