Interesting and exciting news this morning folks, as both The Sun and Daily Mail have us entering the race to sign Wigan striker, Arouna Kone.

The 29 year old Ivorian scored 13 goals in his debut season in the Premier League but was unable to prevent the Latics being relegated.

Depending on which paper you read he has a release clause of either £5m or £6m and last week stated his intention to leave Wigan. He also mentioned that several unnamed clubs have made enquiries about him.

After all the paper talk over Grant Holt at the weekend this wouldn’t seem out of place with the thought that we need four strikers – including Holty.

Whenever I saw Kone play last season he impressed me. He is quick, direct and doesn’t waste time in getting a shot away. He would certainly add to our firepower and the only downsides I can see are his age, although he is the same age (not much re-sale value) as Becchio and younger than Holt and the fact that he regularly plays for his country and travels large distances – Wigan may rue the fact that he was away for six weeks or so at the turn of the year for the African Nation’s Cup.

Naturally there is nothing concrete to back this up yet but it’s nice to be linked with players of this stature, eh?

What do we think?
