Norwich City’s U21 side have been relegated from the top tier of the Barclays U21 Premier League after losing 2-1 to Liverpool on Monday afternoon.

Dmitri Halajko’s side started the game in 11th place in the 12 team U21 league, knowing that only a win over the Reds would see them have a chance to beat the drop – the bottom two teams are relegated.

Norwich started the brighter of the two teams and took the lead courtesy of Glenn Middleton in the 18th minute, the young winger rifled a low drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Liverpool equalised six minutes later after City failed to take a great chance to double their lead. Ryan Kent was on hand to score after good work by Ovie Ejaria.

The second half was a much tighter affair and it was Lloyd Jones who jumped highest to head home in the 80th minute, scoring what turned out to be the winning goal for Liverpool.

It certainly seems that this could be a taste of things to come, with the first team in severe danger of relegation too. The U21 side will now play in the second tier of Premier League Development football next season.

It’s interesting to note that Liverpool played three players with first team experience, Bogdan, Flanagan and Ilori, while City played none.

NORWICH CITY: Oxborough; Ramsay, Crowe, Godfrey, Efete; Grant, Adams (Pollock, 90), McIntosh; Higgs (Lewis, 45), Ashley-Seal (Sambu, 81), Middleton. Unused subs: Pollock, Syme, Hall
