Norwich Linked With Two Goalkeepers

|

Norwich City are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper or two after the loan deal with Angus Gunn expired. It is almost certain, without making an announcement I understand, that Gunn will be in the Premier League next season, so what happens next?

Michael McGovern has patiently been the number two to Angus throughout last season but his high salary, coupled with his desire to play regularly, may mean he moves on this summer.

Third choice keeper, Paul Jones will also be leaving.

Norwich already have Remi Matthews in-house, and the young Gorleston born stopper looks to be well placed to challenge for the number one shirt next season, however, two new names are being linked this afternoon by Press Association Sport, as reported by Sky Sports.

Manchester United’s Dean Henderson and Liverpool’s Danny Ward are the names being linked.

Henderson was on loan at Shrewsbury last season, making 48 appearances as The Shrews finished third in League One. He was my man of the match in the playoff final too.

Liverpool’s Ward is well known to Stuart Webber, who signed him on loan at Huddersfield in 2016.

Ward made 46 appearances for the Terriers, helping them to promotion via the playoff final at Wembley.

This is all very interesting, as City will need at least one, probably two goalkeepers next season, assuming Jones and McGovern leave. The third choice is generally an older player who doesn’t mind not playing, which is a funny scenario if you ask me. Then you have two players that can challenge each other.

The only issue for Remi Matthews would be, as ever, that if a club loan a player to another club, the parent club want their man to play, otherwise wants the point?

Had Angus Gunn warmed the bench last season then you could be sure that Manchester City wouldn’t have been happy.

Interesting, I expect we’ll soon find out what Mr Webber has in mind.
