Ex-Norwich City left back, Tony Spearing has been appointed the Canaries’ new Head of Recruitment the club have announced.
Spearing was the left back when I first started regularly going to Carrow Road, aged about fifteen. He was one of my favourite players at the time and left Norwich for Leicester City in 1988.
When his professional career finished, he had two spells as manager at Kings Lynn having also played for the Linnets – during that time I know that he also supplemented his wages by delivering heating oil for George Goff because he once turned up at my door with a delivery, I was too star struck to say anything!
Since then Tony has been working in scouting roles for both Blackburn and West Brom and he held the role of European head of scouting with the baggies for eight years.
He joins from Championship club, Reading where he was head of scouting and recruitment and will know Lee Darnborough (head of scouting) from his time at West Brom.
“I`m delighted to be back at the club that gave me my football education and I`m really looking forward to working with the rest of the backroom team and contributing to Norwich City`s future success,” Spearing told City`s official website.
Spearing joined Reading in February 2015 but returns to Norwich at a critical time for the club as they battle to stay in the Premier League.
A statement on the Royals` official website said: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Tony for all his hard work and wish him the best of luck in his new position at Carrow Road.’
Welcome aboard Tony, I’ll need some more oil in a month or two…
