Super Mario And The Wycombe Late Late Show

|

This is beginning to become a bit of a habit, isn’t it? The winning of games by a very late goal, scored by our very own Super Mario Vrancic.

His latest was an absolute peach, not dissimilar to the free-kick that he scored against Sheffield Wednesday in those last moments at Carrow Road some eighteen months ago. Coming on the back of another late winner in the game on Tuesday night against Birmingham, this was another “Super Sub” performance from Mario and boy, how we needed it.

I had noted that League leaders, Reading had only just sneaked past Wycombe 1-0 in mid-week, suggesting that they would not be a complete pushover and so it turned out. Mind you, after Emi Buendia’s lovely measured pass put Teemu Pukki through on goal in only the third minute, I was expecting a goal-fest. The passing in that first ten minutes was terrific until that is, Grant Hanley and Tim Krul combined to leave it to each other, meaning that Scott Kashket could bundle the ball into the Norwich net and from that moment on, Wycombe made it difficult for us.

If you watched the game then you’ll know that Wycombe were tough to break down and then, with the game clock running down, they defended for their lives but just couldn’t quite see it out, being undone by a free-kick good enough to win any game, and they didn’t have enough time left to benefit from Adam Idah’s late sending off. I’ve only seen it back once and it looked as though Idah’s hands connected with Joe Jacobsen’s face as the Wycombe left back tried to hold him back.

Violent conduct and three games missed – not good.

Anyway, it’s now three wins in a week and the momentum is starting to build, happy days. Oh, and Lukas Rupp was excellent, again.
