Norwich City’s U23 Development side cruised into the Semi-finals of the Premier League International Cup last night with a 6-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb at Carrow Road.
City will now face Porto after drubbing their Croatian counterparts, albeit with a little help from six players with first team experience.
Kyle Lafferty, Ryan Bennett, Josh Murphy, James Maddison, Ben Godfrey and Matt Jarvis all bolstered the ‘young’ Canaries’ ranks in front of a crowd of just over 2,500.
After a rather quiet before the storm first 26 minutes, Norwich tore their opponents apart with four goals in 20 minutes to be 4-0 up at half time.
Kyle Lafferty was played in on the left by Maddison and his shot was saved by the Zagreb keeper but he couldn’t hold it. Matt Jarvis fired in a follow up that was also saved before Lafferty finally scored.
Four minutes later and Lafferty had his second with a close range header from a Ben Ramsey cross.
Josh Murphy scored next with a typical Murphy goal that was all about pace before Maddison scored with a late penalty. It was a rather cheeky effort that Madders chipped into the top left corner.
The second half was predictably a little quieter with just two more goals.
At half time, Jarvis (on his way back from his latest injury) was replaced by Glenn Middleton and it took the 17 year old just 3 minutes to fire in a fifth, off the post.
The rest of the half was played at a much slower pace, with the visitors sensing they were just playing for pride now. Maddison hit the bar during that time from a free kick before being brought down just outside the area in the 87th minute.
That earned Zagreb Captain, Soldo a second yellow card and a slightly early bath – Maddison put the resulting free kick wide.
There was still time for one more though, when Maddison was again fouled in the Zagreb area for another penalty. Maddison graciously allowed Todd Cantwell, on his 19th birthday, to take the spot kick and score.
Norwich: Killip; Ramsay, Efete, Bennett, Lewis; Godfrey (C); Maddison, Adams; Josh Murphy (Cantwell 67), Lafferty, Jarvis (Middleton 46). Unused subs: Oxborough (GK), Ashley-Seal, Crowe, Odusina, Jaiyesimi
