We have sailed some pretty stormy waters of late at Carrow Road. Those of us that campaigned to get Worthington out stood accused of not supporting the club. We knew that was wrong, and official figures prove it to be the case.

Carrow Road managed to fill to 96.5 per cent of its capacity, putting the club above all of the rest . There was a similar figure last year. Then, it was Sheffield Wednesday that pipped us on the count of individual attendance, but as Vital Norwich pointed out, The Owls may have had more bums on seats, but the figure was way short of the capacity of the ground.

It is a similar situation this time around. Only this time the total head count goes to Sunderland, with an average attendance of 29,179, as opposed to Norwich’s 24,627. Unfortunately, Sunderland’s figure only represents 60.4 per cent of the Stadium of Light’s total capacity.

For Sheffield Wednesday, their mixed fortunes over managers of late has had a knock on effect in their attendances with an average gate of 23,565, a mere 59.1 per cent.

As for the manager, ‘People ask why I left West Ham and the Premiership to come here and I said there was one reason – and what I have seen here doesn’t surprise me,’ said Peter Grant yesterday.

‘The fans were very, very passionate when I was here as a player. They were in smaller numbers then because we never excited them. That’s why I am trying to keep the excitement levels here.’

Yesterday a similar article appeared about behaviour, and the revelation today indicates just how small a proportion of the supporters are misbehaved. That article ended with conjecture about best supported, going on what Delia has told us so frequently. But it is now official, average gates of over 96 per cent.

Maybe it is time for the board to put serious consideration into building atop the City Stand. There is little doubt that they would manage to sell the tickets…
