Lambert To Return For Bennett?

Saturday’s Daily Mail is carrying a small story that suggets that the Aston Villa manager, Paul Lambert wants to sign Elliot Bennett.

Bennett was doggedly pursued by Lambert when he held the reins at Carrow Road during the January of our most recent Championship season but his club at the time, Brighton, held out and refused to sell as they were also looking for a promotion of their own.

After City were promoted to the Premier League though, Lambert again went knocking and this time succeeded in prising the young winger away from the Seagulls.

Since then, Bennett has been in and out of the side’s starting line up, particularly with the arrival of Robert Snodgrass last summer.

Having said that though he has made 56 appearances and is a regularly used substitute by Chris Hughton.

When RVW signed, he was quoted in a Dutch footy mag as saying that he had been told that City were looking to strengthen with two new wingers and an attacking midfield player (Toivonen?).

Bennett mostly plays as an understudy to Snodgrass but did have a decent run in the team when Pilkington was injured last term.

The key point is that he is entering the last year of his contract.

Lambert has been buying foreign players so far, but reports are suggesting he wants a speedy winger.

So what do we think? I personally wouldn’t want any of our players to go to Villa.
However, while being quick and a hard worker, Benno doesn’t score enough goals for my liking but balances that by his effort and ability to track back which CH clearly likes in the lad.

This is all obviously supposition but watch this space, we’ve not extended his contract yet, have we?
