Norwich City’s U23 development squad produced a great comeback last night, as they came from two goals down to snatch a creditable draw against their Newcastle opposite numbers.

The home side had Jonjo Shelvey in their starting line up and it was the England international whose long ball was well finished by Luke Charman with just 10 minutes in the clock.

Just two minutes later and Newcastle had doubled their lead when Macaulay Gillesphey headed home from a corner. The visitors were rocking and looked more than a little shell shocked.

That was how it was at the break but City hauled themselves back into the game in the 49th minute when Devote Aransibia fired home in spectacular fashion after good work and a set up from Todd Cantwell.

City made three changes as they chased another goal and one of the substitutes, Kieran Higgs, was fouled inside the Newcastle area in the 82nd minute for a penalty.

Captain Adam Phillips was coolness personified when he stepped up and slotted the penalty home to earn the young Canaries a deserved draw.

Norwich: Oxborough; Sambu, Wallis, Odusina, Aarons; Phillips, Mourgos (Kamal 76); Middleton (Spyrou 72), Cantwell (Higgs 63), Aransibia; Fonkeu. Unused subs: Ekumah

Attendance: 662
