Thoughts On The Summer That Lies Ahead

A lot has been made of the woes for Norwich in the transfer market over the past 5 years and a lot of canary fans have had their say on who should pass in and mostly out of the revolving doors of Colney.

With the recent arrival of Stuart Webber, many feel (me included) that our club’s fortunes will change over the coming months in the transfer window. No more will Norwich be trying to push over a deal in the eleventh hour for someone like Dwight Gayle and end up panic buying a Johan Elmander just before the window slams shut. Here’s hoping.

With Webber now at the club and hopefully with a better recruitment team in place soon (anything is better than Lee Darnbrough and Ricky Martin) we will be better placed as a club to buy players with the sufficient quality and hunger to succeed in the hurley burley nature of the Championship. Some say the axing of one of the club’s greatest servants in recent times, John Ruddy was harsh, but it makes sense, especially considering the fact that freeing up the wage bill has become more important than in recent times.

That’s what two consecutive seasons in the championship does to you, and is probably one of the many reasons why teams historically find it much harder to gain promotion at the second time of asking. This ruthlessness from Webber is needed at a club where we have had so much deadwood lurking around carrow road for too long, e.g. Bassong and Whittaker, Turner, Lafferty etc
In my opinion, what we need is an LB (hopefully dijks), 3 decent CB’s (sell Klose who isn’t suited to the Championship), a young back up RB and a speedy smaller striker to help Cam and Nelson and give us a different option in attack. Maybe even a 1st choice goalkeeper (if Rudd is deemed not good enough) and a winger who can help us widen the pitch in tight games and create.

I would love to see Webber appoint a foreign head coach who will be more suited to working under a sporting director, I think this will happen and it will be a name we haven’t heard of yet. We know Webber has a tough job and the likelihood of this coming into fruition is unknown, but you never know.

In terms of the CB positions, I feel we should let go of Klose as his performances have been below par and he will probably still command a decent transfer fee. Also, I think we should keep Russ as backup, he knows this league and can help new players bed in. For me Rudd should be our number one, he deserves his chance and fits the bill of young and hungry. I hope to see more of Louis Thompson and Ben Godfrey next season, either of which could displace Tettey, who isn’t good enough anymore. Naismith is another I would let go of, we don’t need 4 CAM’s, 3 is enough and he is another high earner Webber could look to move on.

Anyway, as we all await the new head coach, we can only talk about what we think should happen at NCFC, but talk is cheap and the the work has already started for Webber and co.

Let’s just all hope that the right players are shipped out and the right players are brought in and that 2017-18 will be a better and more productive season for Norwich City.
