Peter Grant will not rush to replace Youssef Safri following the Moroccan’s acrimonious departure from Carrow Road.

The former fans’ favourite left Norwich on Thursday, joining Southampton for an undisclosed sum believed to be around £250,000.

The Canaries have brought in Julien Bellier and Darel Russell since last season, with loanee Jimmy Smith due to return to action within the next two months.

Add to that City’s existing trio of Mark Fotheringham, Andy Hughes and Michael Spillane, and Norwich certainly have the numbers.

But having lost last season’s first choice midfield pairing of Safri and Dickson Etuhu over the course of the summer, the big question is do City have the quality?

Grant told the official site: ‘We will see – you are always looking round about you, and I think I’ve got good quality in here.

‘We’ve not seen Brellier yet, but there’s no doubting his quality. We’ve got the boys who have come in. People like Darel Russell and Fozzy. We’ve got a lot of people in that area.

‘But we will have a look at it. I’m just pleased that someone is no longer here who didn’t want to be here.’

There has clearly been much going on behind the scenes between Safri and Grant since the Scot took the top job at Carrow Road last October – something the boss elaborated on this afternoon.

‘Two days into the job Youssef made it clear that he had an arrangement with the other manager that he could leave the club,’ added Grant on canaries.co.uk.

‘At that time I felt I didn’t have enough players about me. But I went through a lot with people critical that I wasn’t playing him.

‘At the time I felt he had no right to play because there were players that wanted to be here, and he hadn’t shown that same commitment and desire.’
