Angus Gunn has been called up to the full England squad for the upcoming friendly against Brazil.
A broken finger, suffered by Jack Butland in training last week, has meant that manager Gareth Southgate has decided to give the Manchester City keeper, currently on loan at Carrow Road, a call up to the squad.
Gunn played in Friday`s England U21 victory against The Ukraine and kept a clean sheet in the 0-2 win. The game also featured an 81st minute U21 England debut for another Norwich player, James Maddison, who almost immediately after coming on, caused havoc with a free kick.
Getting back to Gunn though, this will be a great experience for him, considering that he hadn`t made a league appearance until joining the Canaries on loan, he has since been an ever present and made 19 appearances so far, with 7 of those being clean sheets.
His father Bryan, is a City legend who made 6 appearances for Scotland during his own career and I`m sure that this will be a very proud moment for him in a season of proud moments for the Gunn family.
Talking after the game, Gareth Southgate described his decision to call up Angus as a “no brainer” as reported by the EDP
“We`ll definitely call-up Angus following the injury to Jack,” confirmed Southgate. “Then we`ll have a look and assess what`s required.
“It would be a good experience for a couple of the Under-21s to have a few days with the seniors, and to be involved against Brazil would be a brilliant experience. A no brainer.
“I`ll find out who played well tonight and warrants the decision, and then liaise with Aidy (Boothroyd) and go from there.”
I doubt Angus will play but you never know and just being around the squad will be a great experience.
