Remi Matthews` stock continues to rise with another career penalty save yesterday for his current club, Plymouth Argyle against high flying Bradford.

Argyle made it 6 games unbeaten in all competitions with a 0-1win at Bradford. The game`s only goal was scored by Jake Jervis in the first half but it was Matthews who was the hero as he saved a penalty from Tony McMahon in the 78th minute.

Before that though, he made superb saves in the 39th and 45th minutes from Paul Taylor to safeguard his team`s lead going into the break.

Before kick off, Bradford were third and Matthews was excellent throughout with the closest Bradford getting to a goal was a shot off the cross bar in the second half from Jake Reeves.

While on loan at Hamilton last season, Remi made three penalty saves, proving himself an able replacement for Michael McGovern, who joined City two summers ago, a player that was widely acknowledged by ‘accies fans as being the difference between relegation and staying in the SPL.

After the game, Remi spoke to the Plymouth Herald

Argyle have not lost since his arrival and they have conceded only one goal.

Matthews said: “It`s not about me today. It`s about the team. Of course, I made the penalty save and that`s what I`m there to do.

“I have been brought in to make saves to hopefully help the team win games and at the minute that`s what we have been doing.

“All I can ask is for the team to keep doing what they are doing.”

Matthews added: “I have not seen it back (the award of the penalty) but in my honest opinion it looked soft.

“I probably should have come for the cross so I have maybe got myself out of jail there.

“It`s one of those where the ref has made his decision and you have just got to forget about it and hopefully make the save. Luckily, today I did.”

Matthews` current loan is on a week by week basis, with Argyle sufffering injuries to all three senior keepers on their books and if social media is anything to go by, the Gorleston born keeper is doing his reputation no harm at all.
