Wes Hoolahan has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup Qualifier with Wales on Friday with the thigh strain he picked up in the first half against Barnsley reports Sky Sports

The loss of the 34 year-old further limits the options available to O`Neill who has already lost former Canary Robbie Brady to suspension as well fellow midfielder Harry Arter and central defenders Ciaran Clark and Shane Duffy.

‘Wes Hoolahan will be out of the game. The scan came back this morning. It’s bad news for us and for his club’ said O’Neil.

RTE journalist, Paul O’Flynn @OFlynnPaul tweeted this morning that Hoolahan will be out for ‘a number of weeks.’

By the sound of that, it seems that City will have to do without the mercurial Hoolahan for a period of time and for most of the ‘promotion’ run-in. It does of course give a chance to another player, with Alex Pritchard most likely to benefit from the Irishman’s absence.

You never know, James Maddison might even get a game.
