James Maddison has received his first full England call up today but it will be of little surprise to members of the Canary Nation.

The reigning Norwich City player of the year joined Leicester City last summer for a fee of somewhere in the region of £25m after a stellar season for the Canaries.

Fifteen goals and eleven assists, including a number of worldies and the winner at Portman Road, endeared the prodigious talent that is James Maddison to the City faithful and the relationship continues, with Maddison present in with the away fans (sitting with John Ruddy and Ryan Bennett) at last night’s game against Derby County at Pride Park.

His move to Leicester City has also started well with 3 goals and 2 assists in his first 7 games. I was talking with a mate recently about what a smart move he made to go to Leicester City rather than a so called “bigger club” where he might not be a first choice starter.

Look at what’s happened to Ross Barkley since he moved to Chelsea from Everton. Barkley is rarely anywhere near a starting place for Chelsea and doesn’t trouble the bench much either. He’s probably earning more than Maddison is but when you get paid such huge salaries, surely regular game time is more important than money, isn’t it?

Gareth Southgate continues to put his faith in youth with Mason Mount, Harry Winks, Nathaniel Chalobah, and uh hum, Ross Barkley all joining Madders in the England squad.

Yes, Barkley is in the squad but I’ll have a bet with anyone that he doesn’t get anywhere near the game time at Chelsea that Maddison will get at Leicester this season. Playing regularly is how young players develop and by joining a mid-table/top half Premier League side (no offence, you Foxes) he will surely develop into the top international midfielder that we all expect him to become.

Well done, Son. You deserve it.

  • The good thing about this is that hopefully, we will get a large payment if he plays – someone said around a million.

  • Great news -he has arrived on the International Scene with perfect timing .Gareth Southgate obviously knows a good thing when he sees it.
I have a good feeling unlike the day when my club made the crass decision to loan him to Aberdeen for 6 months!
