Calum Davenport, who impressed whilst on loan at Carrow Road last season, has been placed on the For Sale list at White Hart Lane

Will Worthington miss out yet again?

The 6ft 4in, 23 year old defender impressed this writer when he was still at Coventry City, and it was a pity that Tottenham Hotspur jumped in and bought him, despite letting him go out on loan alomost immediately to (then- Division One)rivals West Ham.

Eventually the lad came to Carrow Road and there was much talk about the likelihood of making an offer for him. This was dismissed due to the possibility that that Martin Jol would probably ask too much money for him.

The news that he is for sale has many a Canary supporter sitting up and taking notice. The fact that Harry Redknapp is an admirer merely serves to agitate those that believe that Worthington is failing, yet again, to show ANY realisation that the rest of the football world is in full flow and that it is just him that is ‘on holiday’.

Nothing will happen just yet

There is a vast difference in the happenings that seems to have eluded Worthington and his assumed superior knowledge of the game. Whilst all seems calm and serene at the moment, it is no more than the elegant swan that you see on the River Wensum. Under the water, it is paddling like nobody’s business trying just to stay still! Worthington tries to emulate the swan, but he is gradually being washed out to sea!

These pages, as well as many other websites, are speculating about who might be on Worthington’s wish list. Calum Davenport should be up there with those names.

The problem with Norwich City’s prospects of fielding a team that could make a genuine impression on the race for promotion is that Worthington has openly told the fans what he thinks of them, but only shows the Board that he couldn’t give a toss for NCFC by kidding them that he is doing what the rest of the football world is doing.

The news tickers prove you wrong again, Worthington.

It isn’t me that is out of step

The calls from various groups, asking for a show of unity come August 5th will not be heeded if the fans are forced to endure another transfer window of belated activity, possibly one or two signings of the likes of Hughes and Robinson, all the real opportunities passing Norwich City by because Nigel Worthington thinks that he can dictate the pace to his contempories; well, there is a good number that will just carry the protests on into the new season. There won’t be the getting behind the team as Delia and her cohorts hope for.

Nigel Worthington has lost the support of an extremely large number of supporters, many have said or done little because they want the players to still believe, but even they, the players, must see all of the transfer inactivity as wasted opportunities.

There is a dilemma here at Norwich arising because of Worthington. Players worth their salt are starting to scan the horizon for places where they can better their careers. Then there are those who only wish to end their playing careers in Norfolk, and you have got to ask why?

Yes, the area is enticingly inviting and many would wish to settle in Norfolk. As a football player, though, isn’t it cosy that there is a certain ‘up yours’ attitude from the manager to all and sundry that question his motivation. That would surely encourage the fading player to see the sun go down on his football career, knowing that he can retire on a good income from a club that has fallen, hook line and sinker, for the Irish Blarney puked out by Worthington?

We want ambition

The fans are ambiguous. There are a good many supporters that see the 2004/05 Premiership season as a brief outing in the top flight. But there are far more of us that remember the days before 1995, as Norwich seemed to have settled into the role enjoyed by the likes of Charlton today. Mid table, with that ever lingering hope of European football.

Too many now view the ambitions of the club as still mid table, just a whole division lower. Otherwise, why does the board continue to let Worthington get away with being an ‘also ran’?

The board openly states that they, too, long for ambition. Where is it going, though? All of the transfer activity going on about us, and Worthington apparently doing little or nothing. This just makes the supporter angry to see apparent inactivity and platitudes from Neil Doncaster about phones ringing red hot.

Calum Davenport was talked of with yearning when he was on loan here. Now Nigel Worthington could do much to try to win the fans back on side by letting one and all see that he is prepared to back his words with actions!
