With the Championship season being shortened in terms of months available to play the games, the long slog of Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday matches was always going to require a large(ish) squad for Norwich City to be competitive.

Well, after Friday’s video press conference, Daniel Farke has quite a few less fit players to choose from for the visit of Swansea City this afternoon. As ever, Vital Norwich Forum stalwart, FC Bears was watching and here’s his take on what was said…

Injuries!

Cantwell, Placheta, Rupp, Gibson, Sorensen and Stiepermann, all have issues and haven’t trained. DF says that Sorensen and Gibson haven’t played much and now their bodies are struggling due to too many games……..I am glad we have these types of players, whose bodies get worse the more they play instead of getting fitter!

Xavi Quintilla’s injury issue continues and he will not play against Swansea, Sorensen is also looking like he might be out.

Pathetic.

DF says that the plan is that Gibson plays at left back but not the whole game as he isn’t fully fit so if he does play, it wouldn’t be for 90 minutes. DF continues, saying that he wants a bit more from Skipp and Rupp and the pressure is on them as we have McLean, Tettey and when fit Sorensen who can come in and replace them.

We all said that we have three central defenders and that isn’t ideal but these defenders are injury prone and already this season all three of them have been injured. Why is DF thinking of playing an 80% fit Gibson at left back? He will be the target for Swansea and if he isn’t fit then he will get done every time. Plus you can add the fact that Gibson is so slow.

Go play Aarons at left back and Mumba at right back and then have Zimmermann and Hanley at CB…Sorted.

So many players not fit. It is a worry especially after last season having so many injuries too.

DF didn’t even seem to even know if Cantwell was coming to training today?

If they all miss out then we will be down to the bare bones (already) – I would go like this:

Krul

Mumba
Zimmermann
Hanley
Aarons

Skipp
Tettey

Martin
Vrancic
Emi

Pukki

Subs:

McGovern – Hugill – McLean- Omobamidele – Idah – ? – ?

I think that Jordan Hugill has been signed to basically be the new Rhodes and be a good lad in the dressing room. DF does seem to say the same things about him that he did about Rhodes. Pukki is one of the best strikers in the country, is our most important forward and is the one who really suites our style – according to DF that is.

Ah, Adam Idah is back so that is some good news at last.

Thank goodness we have a big squad, eh? The trouble is we’ve suffered injuries to so many players all at the same time. Bad luck or something else? Swansea have got off to a very good start, so this will be another tough one. Hopefully the Swans will come to play, rather than the likes of Millwall, Derby and Birmingham who all came not to lose. If that happens then we should still have plenty going forwards but it’s the defence that still concerns me.

  • Feels like a similar situation to those that gave us Lewis and Aaron’s debuts. Maybe Omobidele will be next to step up. If your overall strategy is to develop younger players you have to carry a smaller squad which means you accept the risk of unplanned debuts. Certainly its more exciting to see a young player trying to come through in these situations then drip fed in 10 minutes at the end of a few games at the end of the season. Honestly would love to see Josh Martin start, and get a few more u23 on the bench if we have an injury crisis. Opportunities like this will continue to attract the brighter talent to the club.

    • Bali Mumba and Josh Martin were the two young lads that made the difference, especially Mumba, what an impact and what a result!
